Orthodontics is a dental process of straightening teeth for cosmetic or functional reasons. For this purpose, orthodontists commonly use braces or retainers for straightening the teeth during orthodontic emergencies. However, patients receiving braces treatment will have a variety of components implanted in their mouths, including rubber and metal elements.

If you are now getting or have previously received orthodontic treatment, you are familiar with the fact that it takes some time to adjust to braces or a retainer. You will feel discomfort and mild pain as your teeth begin to move and adjust into a proper alignment. These issues are considered orthodontic emergencies.

Types of orthodontic emergencies:

orthodontic emergencies

  1. Ulcers in the mouth: Braces can sometimes cause irritation as well as blisters or ulcers in the mouth or gums. These ulcers cause inflammation and pain within the mouth. When your mouth adjusts to the braces, ulcers will gradually disappear. However, if the blisters and ulcers persist, you should see your orthodontist.
  2. Loose wire, bracket, or elastic bands: Sometimes the wires, brackets, or bands on your braces become loose, or brackets get dislodged from the wires. It occurs as a result of poor eating habits or when you fiddle with your braces habitually. As a result, these loose appliances protrude into the mouth, causing injury.
  3. Broken retainer: Retainers are not invincible. The metal or plastic components of your retainer may twist or break. If this occurs, remove the retainer immediately and contact your orthodontist. If the retainer has broken, place all the pieces in a plastic bag and bring them to your orthodontist. Call your orthodontist and make an appointment as soon as possible so that you do not go without a retainer for a lengthy time since your teeth might move.
  4. Swallowing braces or other equipment: is an uncommon occurrence. If this happens, try to stay calm. Whatever was consumed will usually pass through regular bowel movements. However, if you have difficulties breathing, you should seek medical treatment immediately.
  5. Mouth sores: Everybody has a distinct jawline and mouth structure. While one individual may be uncomfortable with the braces in their mouth, others may not feel comfortable with theirs. Nonetheless, you should examine your mouth regularly and look for sores on your lips and in your mouth. Although discomfort is common, it can also be irritating and uncomfortable.

Severe orthodontic emergencies

  • Major dental trauma or injury to the face, mouth, or teeth
  • Gum infection and bleeding in the mouth or face
  • Pain in the mouth that is unbearable

If any of these issues emerge, contact your general dentist as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the injury, going to the emergency unit may be your best option.

Conclusion

Orthodontic emergencies, although uncommon, can occur. In an emergency, the best thing you can do is be calm. As a general guideline, if you are in significant pain or have an appliance problem that you cannot manage at home, contact your orthodontist first. Your orthodontist will do everything necessary to reduce your suffering and resolve it.
