What Is The Procedure For Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the process of removing infected or impacted teeth from the jawbone. It is an outpatient procedure. However, your dentist may administer a combination of local, intravenous, or general anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort.

The reasons for which you may need tooth extraction include:

  • It consists of pulling one or a few teeth to prepare your jaw for orthodontia.
  • If there is a decayed tooth and it is damaging adjacent teeth.
  • If there is no space in the mouth.
  • At times a tooth does not erupt in the right direction and gets blocked within the gums. Such teeth cause extreme pain resulting in eating difficulties.

Procedure

Removing your teeth requires some initial tests to ensure any future complications. Imaging of the jawbone and teeth by X-rays because it shows the exact position of all of your teeth. Your dentist will inquire about the medications you are taking. It is also necessary to inform the dentist if you have any pre-existing disease or not.

Firstly, the dentist begins by numbing the area using local anesthetics. He then applies a numbing gel for 1-2 minutes, therefore, reducing the discomfort. Shock-absorbing ligament helps suspend the jaw teeth from a bony tooth socket known as periodontal.

The first step is to release the teeth from periodontal ligament fibers with an instrument consisting of a thin blade; called a peristome. There are two basic categories of tooth extraction:

Simple extraction:

A simple tooth extraction process includes the removal of the teeth that are visible in the mouth. This process removes badly damaged or decayed teeth. General Dentist do this procedure using local anesthesia.

Some professional dentists use conscious sedation for simple cases of pulling the teeth. In most cases, over-the-counter medication relieves the pain after tooth extraction.

  • Simple extraction
  • Surgical extraction

Surgical extraction:

An oral surgeon does a surgical operation that involves the removal of teeth that are not visible in your mouth. The reason these teeth are not visible is either :

  • They have not come out
  • They are broken

After the surgical teeth-pulling procedure, you may also receive pain medications.

Final Thoughts

One should try to avoid the extraction process to keep your natural teeth. In conclusion, tooth extraction is the best choice if the tooth is damaged beyond repair. Extraction doesn’t produce any severe pain after the process. Usually, it heals within a week, but that mainly depends upon the type of extraction. However, it may take longer for impacted tooth extraction and immune-compromised patients.
