TMJ Q & A

What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the joint that attaches your jaw to your skull on either side of your head. You use your TMJ all the time for movements such as chewing food, speaking, or opening your mouth for a wide yawn.

Pain at this complex joint is called a TMJ disorder, sometimes referred to as TMD. Most of the time, TMJ pain is temporary and goes away with home care such as jaw exercises or over-the-counter pain relievers.

Severe TMJ pain that doesn’t improve with home care may require professional treatment. The team at Abar Orthodontics diagnoses and treats TMJ disorders so you can find relief.

How do I know if I have a TMJ disorder?

Symptoms of a TMJ disorder vary in severity. They may be temporary or persist for many years. The most common signs and symptoms of a TMJ disorder include:

  • Pain or soreness in your jaw
  • Aching in and around your ear
  • Facial pain or headaches
  • Stiffness in your jaw
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Swelling in the side of your face
  • Popping or clicking noise when you open or close your mouth

TMJ pain and symptoms may affect both sides of the head, or only one. Severe disorders can cause the jaw to lock up, making it extremely difficult to open or close your mouth.

What cause TMJ disorders?

Injury to your jaw or conditions such as arthritis can increase your risk of developing TMJ disorders. However, in many cases, the cause remains unknown. People who habitually grind or clench their teeth may also be more susceptible to TMJ and other jaw problems.

How can an orthodontics help relieve TMJ pain?

First, Dr. Abar or a member of his team thoroughly evaluate your teeth and jaw. They may take X-rays or make impressions of your mouth to help with an accurate diagnosis.

Then, they create an individualized treatment plan to relieve your TMJ pain and symptoms. Depending on your unique needs, this may include wearing a customized orthodontic appliance or getting braces to correct TMJ problems due to bite misalignment.
